In a world where crises are escalating, one organization stands out as a beacon of hope—but they need your help. UK-Med, a leading global Emergency Medical Team, is on the frontlines of the most devastating humanitarian emergencies, from Ukraine to Gaza and beyond. But here's the challenge: as disasters grow more complex, the need for precise, actionable data has never been greater. That's where you come in.
UK-Med is seeking a Data Manager to join their mission, ensuring that every decision made in the field is backed by high-quality, reliable data. This isn’t just a job—it’s a chance to save lives by strengthening health systems in the most critical moments.
But here’s where it gets controversial: In the chaos of emergencies, data management often takes a backseat. Yet, without it, medical responses can falter. Do you believe data is the unsung hero of humanitarian aid? This role proves it.
The Heart of UK-Med’s Mission: The Register
At the core of UK-Med’s rapid response is its Register—a global network of over 1,000 health and humanitarian experts ready to deploy at a moment’s notice. These aren’t just professionals; they’re lifesavers, from clinicians to logisticians, trained to meet WHO standards in the harshest conditions. The Register is the backbone of UK-Med’s ability to deliver care where it’s needed most.
The Role: Data Manager
As the Data Manager, you’ll be the linchpin of UK-Med’s health information systems. Your mission? To ensure data is collected, analyzed, and reported with precision, enabling teams to make evidence-based decisions in high-pressure environments. This isn’t a desk job—it’s a boots-on-the-ground role, often in conflict zones or disaster-stricken areas.
And this is the part most people miss: While the role demands technical expertise, it’s equally about leadership and adaptability. You’ll train teams, design data tools, and uphold patient confidentiality—all while navigating the unpredictability of emergencies.
Key Responsibilities: What You’ll Do
- Build and Maintain Systems: Develop data management processes that align with emergency response goals.
- Design Tools: Create and adapt data collection tools to meet project needs.
- Lead and Train: Implement Standard Operating Procedures and train staff on data quality and security.
- Analyze and Report: Conduct in-depth health data analysis to guide program decisions.
- Collaborate: Work with Medical Coordinators and MEAL teams to prepare critical reports.
- Uphold Ethics: Ensure all data processes comply with safeguarding and confidentiality standards.
A controversial interpretation: Some might argue that focusing on data in emergencies slows down response times. But UK-Med knows that without accurate data, responses can be misdirected—costing lives. What’s your take?
Who Are We Looking For?
The ideal candidate is a blend of technical wizardry and humanitarian passion. You’ve got a degree in epidemiology, public health, or data science, and at least three years of experience in data management—preferably in humanitarian settings. You’re proficient in statistical methods, database management, and GIS, and you thrive under pressure.
But here’s the real question: Can you balance the urgency of emergency response with the precision required for data integrity? If so, this role is tailor-made for you.
Terms and Conditions
- Pay: Up to £3,500/month, depending on location and experience.
- Deployment: 6–8 weeks at a time, often in high-stress environments.
- Hours: Full-time, with evenings and weekends during emergencies.
- Leave: 33 days annually (or compensation if leave isn’t possible).
- Clearances: Medical fitness, DBS checks, and sanctions screening required.
