Prashant Sreekumar, a 44-year-old father of three, experienced severe chest pains while at work on December 22nd. A concerned client drove him to Grey Nuns Hospital, where he was admitted to the emergency room. Prashant's father, Kumar, soon joined him, and the family's nightmare began.
"He told me, 'Papa, I cannot bear the pain,'" Kumar recalled. The pain was excruciating, a 15 out of 10, according to Prashant. Yet, despite an electrocardiogram (ECG) and assurances from the staff, Prashant was made to wait, his condition seemingly downplayed.
But here's where it gets controversial: Prashant waited for over eight long hours. During this time, his blood pressure soared, a clear sign of distress. Yet, he was offered only Tylenol for his pain. And this is the part most people miss - the crucial hours that could have made a difference.
Finally, Prashant was called into the treatment area, but it was too late. He collapsed and passed away from an apparent cardiac arrest, leaving his wife and three young children behind. The family remembers Prashant as a loving father, a "goofball" with his kids, and a man who brought joy to those around him.
Family and friends are now left with more questions than answers. How could a man in such obvious distress fall through the cracks of the healthcare system? Varinder Bhullar, a family friend and client of Prashant's accounting services, expressed his devastation and disappointment in the hospital's handling of the situation.
Covenant Health, which operates Grey Nuns Hospital, has declined to comment on the specifics of Prashant's care due to privacy concerns. However, they offered their sympathies to the family and emphasized the importance of patient safety and care.
As the family grieves, they are haunted by the memory of Prashant's final moments - a painful death in a hospital, without ever receiving the medical attention he desperately needed. "They took my baby for nothing," Kumar said, his words echoing the heart-wrenching loss.
