A devastating fire engulfed a bar in the picturesque Swiss Alps town of Crans-Montana during New Year’s celebrations, resulting in tragic casualties. According to police reports released early Thursday morning, numerous individuals are feared dead, and approximately 100 others have sustained injuries, many of which are severe.
The blaze erupted at a bar known as Le Constellation, where a large crowd had gathered to ring in the new year. While the exact number of casualties is still being confirmed, initial estimates suggest that several dozen people may have lost their lives in this horrific incident.
Emergency responders, including helicopters and ambulances, quickly rushed to the scene to provide aid to the victims, some of whom were tourists from various countries. "We are heartbroken by this tragedy,” remarked Frédéric Gisler, the commander of the Valais Cantonal police, during a press conference.
The sheer volume of injured individuals overwhelmed local medical facilities, with the intensive care unit and operating rooms at the regional hospital reaching full capacity almost immediately, according to regional councilor Mathias Rénard. This has prompted local officials to urge caution among the tourist population who flock to the ski slopes, warning them to avoid accidents that could further strain already overwhelmed medical resources.
The fire reportedly began around 1:30 a.m., as confirmed by police spokesperson Gaëtan Lathion. He noted that over a hundred people were inside the establishment when the flames broke out, resulting in numerous injuries and fatalities. Investigators have launched an inquiry into the cause of the fire, although Lathion emphasized that they are still in the preliminary phases of their investigation. "This is a world-famous ski resort teeming with visitors," he stated, adding to the somber nature of the event.
Access to the affected area has been strictly prohibited, and authorities have issued a no-fly zone over Crans-Montana. Additionally, a reception center and a helpline have been established for families impacted by this disaster. Located in the heart of the Swiss Alps, Crans-Montana is just 25 miles north of the iconic Matterhorn, making it a popular destination for skiing and winter sports enthusiasts.
