This incident occurred on the Ballyrobin Road near Templepatrick just after 8 AM. The collision is understood to have involved a shuttle bus that typically operates between the airport and the heart of Belfast. As a consequence, several Translink services heading to and from the international airport have been cancelled, leaving many stranded or forced to seek alternative arrangements.
Images from the scene paint a stark picture: the road is cordoned off, and the blue bus involved is partially off the roadway, with visible damage to its front. The impact of this incident is expected to cause road closures for the majority of Saturday.
But here's where it gets serious... The response from emergency services was swift and extensive. Three fire appliances, including a specialized rescue team, were dispatched. The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) also mobilized a significant contingent, sending four emergency crews, two Hazardous Area Response Teams (HART), three ambulance officers, and two ambulance doctors. In a testament to the severity of the situation, Air Ambulance was also tasked to the scene with its Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) team.
According to a spokesperson for NIAS, the emergency call came in at 7:58 AM. After initial assessment and treatment at the location, one patient was transported to the Royal Victoria Hospital.
This afternoon, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) reiterated their warning that the Ballyrobin Road will remain closed for an extended period. They specifically advised those heading to the airport to factor in considerable extra travel time and to be prepared to use alternative routes. Diversions are currently in place at key junctions, including the roundabout of Ballyrobin Road, Old Ballyrobin Road, and Rickmore Road Upper.
For those navigating from the M2 towards the airport, the PSNI suggests a detour: travel through Templepatrick, then take the A6 Belfast Road for about three miles, followed by a left turn onto the A26 Oldstone Road for another three miles. Finally, turn right onto Ballyrobin Road to resume the normal route to the airport.
