I expect everyone’s going to be sitting at 16,' he added.

He argues that with advancements in combustion technology, a higher ratio like 18:1 is achievable and would offer significant performance gains. 'There’s performance in every tenth of a ratio that you can get,' he explained. 'So every manufacturer should really be aiming at 15.999, as far as they dare, when it’s measured.'

The scrutiny Red Bull is facing underscores the high stakes of the new Powertrains project. For Hodgkinson, who joined from Mercedes to lead the initiative, the team at Milton Keynes has assembled the best possible setup. 'We’ve got all the ingredients,' he said, likening the team to pioneers in a startup environment. 'But whether it will turn into a Michelin meal, we’ll have to see.'

Despite his confidence, Hodgkinson remains cautious about making predictions. With teams yet to test their engines on track together, it’s impossible to know where Red Bull truly stands. 'It’s like a 400-meter sprint in an empty stadium,' he analogized. 'All I know is that we’re running as fast as we possibly can.'
