Ohio State's Transfer Portal Dilemma: Can the Buckeyes Fill the Gaps in Time?
The college football transfer portal has been open for 10 days, and while Ohio State has made some notable additions, several critical positions remain unfilled. But here's where it gets controversial... Is the Buckeyes' patient approach to the portal a strategic masterstroke or a risky gamble that could cost them a shot at the national championship in 2026?
As of this update, Ohio State has secured seven potential starters through the transfer portal, including former Duke safety Terry Moore. However, the Buckeyes still face significant roster gaps. And this is the part most people miss... Despite their recent acquisitions, Ohio State has yet to land a cornerback, defensive end, or kicker for the upcoming season. They're also in the market for depth at quarterback, running back, defensive tackle, wide receiver, and tight end. With only 84 players on scholarship, the Buckeyes have seven open spots to fill, and potentially more if additional players enter the portal or declare for the NFL draft.
The Major Needs
Kicker: Ohio State is still searching for a kicker who can consistently make 50-yard field goals and deliver in high-pressure situations. After losing Jackson Courville to the transfer portal, the Buckeyes are in dire need of an upgrade at this position.
Cornerback: With only four returning scholarship cornerbacks, Ohio State needs at least two more to fill out its 2026 depth chart. The Buckeyes have struck out on several top targets, including Auburn's Kayin Lee and Maryland's La'Khi Roland, both of whom signed with Tennessee. Is Ohio State's cornerback situation a ticking time bomb, or will they find a solution before it's too late?
Defensive End: While not as urgent as cornerback or kicker, defensive end remains a top priority. Ohio State needs an experienced edge defender to complement Kenyatta Jackson Jr. and Zion Grady. With top target Chaz Coleman off the board, the Buckeyes are now looking at hybrid linebacker Qua Russaw and other potential options like Missouri's Damon Wilson and Florida State's Mandrell and Darryll Desir.
Could Use Another
Defensive Tackle: Ohio State has already added UCF transfer John Walker to replace Kayden McDonald, but they're still looking for a second transfer defensive tackle to round out their two-deep. Alabama's James Smith and Pittsburgh's Francis Brewu are both strong options, but will the Buckeyes land either of them?
Wide Receiver: Despite adding UTSA transfer Devin McCuin, Ohio State still lacks experienced depth at wide receiver. With Quincy Porter, Mylan Graham, and Bryson Rodgers all entering the portal, the Buckeyes need another veteran wideout to avoid relying heavily on freshmen.
Safety: While Ohio State has added two potential starters in Earl Little Jr. and Terry Moore, they could still use another experienced safety for additional depth. But is this a luxury or a necessity?
Looking for Depth
Running Back: With Bo Jackson returning, running back is no longer a major need, but the Buckeyes still want to add a transfer running back for depth and experience.
Quarterback: Ohio State is looking for a quarterback with experience to round out their depth chart, as they currently have only three scholarship quarterbacks for 2026.
Should Be Considering Options
Offensive Line: While the Buckeyes may be content with their returning offensive linemen, they should consider adding competition after a disappointing end to the 2025 season. Are they underestimating the need for an upgrade, or is their current roster good enough?
Punter: Ohio State's punting game ranked just 79th nationally in 2025, yet they haven't been formally linked to any transfer punters. Should they be looking for an upgrade, or is Joe McGuire the answer?
As the transfer portal continues to evolve, one thing is clear: Ohio State's ability to fill these gaps will play a significant role in determining their success in 2026. What do you think? Are the Buckeyes on the right track, or are they making a critical mistake by not addressing these needs more aggressively? Let us know in the comments.
