The Carlisle River fire, as it's known, has already consumed approximately 8000 hectares of land since Saturday night, when it broke through containment lines due to extreme heat.
While Melbourne is expected to experience a cooler day with a maximum temperature of 25 degrees, the fire's impact is far from over. An air quality alert has been issued for the region, including Geelong, as winds carry the smoke across central Victoria. Despite this, the Environmental Protection Agency reported fair air quality in Spotswood early on Sunday.
The emergency warning, updated at 5:19 am, emphasized the fire's proximity to Gellibrand, a small town with a population of 230. The alert urged residents to take shelter immediately, as the fire may directly impact homes and lives.
The situation is dire, with a total fire ban in place for several fire districts, including Northern Country, North Central, North East, and Gippsland. Authorities are particularly concerned about the Dargo and Walwa fires in the High Country, which are expected to intensify due to the heatwave. The Walwa, Mount Lawson fire is especially challenging, as wind changes will not reach it, putting immense pressure on firefighters.
This fire season has already been devastating, with over 1000 structures, including 289 homes, damaged by bushfires in Victoria. The Longwood fire, which wreaked havoc earlier this month, is now contained, but the threat remains high. And this is the part most people miss: the fire's impact extends beyond the immediate danger, affecting major events like the Australian Open, which was temporarily suspended due to the heat.
