Bold opening: Justin Thomas is stepping back into competitive golf sooner than his PGA TOUR return, but not on the main tour just yet. And this is the part fans—and critics—will want to talk about.
Justin Thomas will make his comeback next week, though not for the PGA TOUR. The 16-time TOUR winner announced on Tuesday via social media that his first competitive appearance since microdiscectomy surgery will come with Atlanta Drive at TGL on Monday, February 23.
Thomas, 32, hasn’t struck a ball in competition since the Ryder Cup in September, but he recently shared that he’s been fully cleared for golf activities, posting a clip of him driving on the range. Earlier in the year, he had indicated his season would begin during the PGA TOUR’s Florida Swing.
“I’m looking to come back competitively at some point during the Florida swing. I know how important it is to get this injury behind me so that I’m only looking forward over the course of the season,” Thomas said in January.
The former standout underwent surgery in November at New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery to address a disc issue that caused what he described as “nagging hip pain” for several months. He has shared rehabilitation updates on social media, including videos of himself using resistance bands in the gym.
Last season, Thomas finished seventh in the 2025 FedExCup standings, highlighted by a victory at the RBC Heritage—the first win since the 2022 PGA Championship.
Atlanta Drive will host a TGL doubleheader on Monday, with games against Boston Common Golf at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN and Los Angeles Golf Club at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Thomas previously helped Atlanta Drive win the league’s inaugural TGL championship, earning the first SoFi Cup.
Think about this: returning to competition this soon raises questions about readiness versus momentum, the pressure to perform, and how early-season form might shape his 2026 goals.
