FIFA World Cup 2026 Draw: Everything You Need to Know | Teams, Pots, Schedule & More! (2026)

The FIFA World Cup 2026 draw is almost here, and the stage is set for football’s grandest spectacle yet. With the tournament just weeks away, the draw will take place at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., on Friday, signaling the official path to the biggest ever World Cup.

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:30 PM IST and will be streamed live for viewers in India.

Next year’s World Cup promises to be historic, expanding the main draw to 48 teams—16 more than the Qatar edition. By next June, 42 teams have already earned their spots, with Canada, Mexico, and the United States co-hosting the finals from June 1 to July 19. The remaining six places will be decided through playoff matches in March.

During the official draw, the 48 teams will be divided into 12 groups, labeled A through L, each containing four teams. Pot 1 will feature the top nine seeds plus the three hosts.

As is tradition, the host nations are pre-assigned: Mexico in Group A, Canada in Group B, and the United States in Group D.

The defending champions Argentina, along with Spain, France, and England, are the four top seeds in Pot 1. FIFA has also confirmed that none of these teams can meet before the semi-finals.

Other notable Pot 1 entrants include Brazil, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, all part of this elite group.

The playoff qualifiers, yet to be determined, will be placed in Pot 4. Italy, a four-time world champions, is among the playoff teams and could move to Pot 4 if they clinch qualification.

Newcomers Uzbekistan will appear in Pot 3, while fellow first-timers Jordan and Cape Verde are positioned in Pot 4.

Group draw rules specify that no group may include more than two UEFA teams. All other confederations (AFC, CONCACAF, CAF, CONMEBOL, OFC) may contribute at most one team per group.

Following the round-robin stage, the top two teams from each group will advance, along with the eight best third-placed teams, into the knockout rounds. The draw also fixes each team’s route through the revamped 32-team knockout phase that follows the group stage.

Viewing options for India: the FIFA World Cup 2026 draw will be streamed live on FIFA+ and the tournament’s social media channels. There will be no TV broadcast of the draw in India.

Which outcomes do you think will shape the group stage drama? Will the expanded 48-team format deliver the most exciting World Cup ever, or raise questions about competitiveness? Share your thoughts in the comments.
