A New Chapter Unveiled: Dharma Productions' Bold Move
In a surprising turn of events, Dharma Productions has announced its decision to part ways with Cornerstone, marking a significant shift in the entertainment industry. But here's the twist: this split isn't just a simple breakup; it's a strategic move that promises to reshape the landscape of talent management in India.
Dharma Productions, led by the renowned Karan Johar and Adar Poonawalla, has confirmed its acquisition of Cornerstone's stake in their joint venture, Dharma Cornerstone Agency. And with this move, they're not just rebranding; they're relaunching with a bang as the Dharma Collab Artists Agency (DCAA).
The news follows reports of tensions between Johar and Bunty Sajdeh, the powerhouse behind Cornerstone. Sources claimed that the purchase of a 50% stake in Dharma Productions by pharmaceuticals magnate Poonawalla earlier this year had caused a rift. However, Johar took to Instagram to address these rumors, emphasizing his long-standing friendship with Sajdeh.
"Selling a stake to Poonawalla meant integrating my businesses under one umbrella," Johar explained. "Bunty and I mutually agreed to go our separate ways, but our friendship remains as strong as ever. I'm excited to see his new venture and will always be there to support him."
And so, Bunty Sajdeh, manager to cricket legend Virat Kohli, is expected to continue his journey independently, while DCAA, based in Mumbai, has unveiled a new executive lineup. At the helm is Uday Singh Gauriwill, who continues his role as CEO from the previous agency, with Rajeev Masand as COO.
Uday, with his two decades of experience in talent management, music, and live entertainment, is set to steer DCAA towards new heights. His focus? "Expanding DCAA's reach, building new avenues, and creating a home for culturally influential talent."
The agency's roster boasts an impressive lineup, including Janhvi Kapoor, Ananya Panday, and Sara Ali Khan, among others. Apoorva Mehta, CEO of Dharma Productions, emphasized the importance of talent in shaping their identity and future.
"With DCAA, we're creating a structured platform to support artists across various disciplines. It's a long-term commitment to deepening our role in the creative economy," Mehta said.
Singh Gauri, CEO of DCAA, added, "We're building a platform that understands the modern artist. Representation is about more than just negotiation; it's about cultural understanding and industry foresight. Our goal is to develop lasting careers and create meaningful connections between talent and opportunities. It's about scale, yes, but also about care and collaboration."
Dharma Productions, founded in 1976 by the late Sri Yash Johar, has come a long way. Under Karan Johar's leadership, the company has produced iconic films like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and Baahubali. Dharmatic Entertainment, a subsidiary, has also made its mark with streaming shows like The Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives and deals with Netflix and Prime Video.
