Chicago Cubs: Daniel Palencia's Upside as Closer and Other MLB News (2026)

The Closer Conundrum: A Tale of Uncertainty

Good morning, and welcome to a Saturday edition of Bleacher Nation! I'm Michael, and today, we're diving into the world of the Chicago Cubs and some intriguing developments.

First things first, I've got an exciting update about the website. I'm working on some fresh designs and layouts to enhance your user experience. My goal is to make navigating and discovering content on Bleacher Nation a breeze. We're learning and evolving, and I want to ensure we deliver what our readers truly desire.

One of the key features I'm implementing is sticky game threads. These will be especially handy when multiple games are happening simultaneously. We've got something similar now (you might have noticed our live blogs), but I'm refining it to accommodate our busy sports schedule.

While some changes, particularly on the homepage, are still in the works, you can expect some exciting updates on our category pages soon. For instance, on the /Cubs page, you'll find daily updates on standings, stats, the roster, and the schedule. We've already tested this with the Bears, and it's going to be a game-changer for Cubs fans.

Now, let's talk about Daniel Palencia and his role as the closer. Palencia's performance last season was impressive (2.91 ERA, 22 saves, 3.81 K/BB), and he's the obvious choice for the role heading into 2026. However, here's where it gets controversial: the experiences with Adbert Alzolay and Porter Hodge in the past two seasons have left a mark.

Both Alzolay and Hodge emerged as key relievers mid-season, but their follow-up seasons were less than stellar. Alzolay's numbers dropped significantly (4.67 ERA, 4 saves, 2.17 K/BB), and Hodge's performance also took a hit (6.27 ERA, 2 saves, 2.22 K/BB). Despite Palencia's potential and higher ceiling, it's hard not to feel a twinge of nervousness, given the past.

But here's the catch: relievers are notoriously volatile. Palencia, with his limited experience and recent improvements, embodies the uncertainty of the position. However, it's important to distinguish between emotional reactions and statistical projections. What happened to Alzolay and Hodge doesn't necessarily predict Palencia's future. He could just as easily maintain or improve upon his performance.

And this is the part most people miss: Palencia's upside as a closer is immense. His age and potential make him an exciting prospect. So, while I'm thrilled about his prospects and believe he deserves the closer role, the past experiences do cast a shadow of doubt.

On a lighter note, it was Palencia's birthday just a couple of days ago! A belated happy birthday to him!

In other news, Paul Goldschmidt is back with the Yankees for another season. After a solid performance last year (.274/.328/.403, 103 wRC+), he's signed a one-year, $4M deal for his age-38 season. With 372 home runs under his belt, I'm hoping he adds a few more before calling it a career.

And finally, a fun fact: our Daily Random Cub yesterday was Lou Piniella, whom my Italian grandma insisted was Italian, despite his non-Italian heritage.
