Breaking News: Bushfires Erupt in Namadgi National Park!
On January 3, 2026, multiple bushfires ignited within the picturesque Namadgi National Park, located southwest of Canberra. Firefighters were swiftly responding to the blazes, with two ignitions reported near Cotter Hut and another near Bendora Dam.
Firefighting efforts are underway, involving both aircraft and remote area fire teams. An ESA spokesperson confirmed that, at the time of the report, there was no immediate threat to life or property. However, residents should be aware that smoke and helicopters will likely be visible in the area for the next 24 hours.

But here's where it gets controversial... The exact cause of the fires remains unknown, but the bushfires emerged as a stormfront swept through southeastern NSW and the southern ACT. The State Emergency Service issued warnings about potential lightning strikes and hail.
The Bureau of Meteorology reported a moist and unstable airmass over the inland southeast of NSW. Showers and thunderstorms were repeatedly developing and moving along a weak trough, increasing the risk of localized heavy rainfall. Stronger storms may also produce large hail. The severe thunderstorms could bring heavy rainfall, leading to flash flooding and large hailstones over the next few hours. The NSW SES is actively monitoring the situation and will update warnings as needed.
