Baseball has become the unexpected star of the 33rd SEA Games, with Thai media reporting that its popularity is now on par with football in the host nation. The sport's resurgence is particularly evident in the enthusiasm shown by the crowd during the men's final between Thailand and the Philippines at the Queen Sirikit 60th Birthday Anniversary Stadium in Thanyaburi on Friday.
The stadium was packed to capacity, with fans spilling over into the visiting team's fan zones, creating an electric atmosphere that is rarely seen in Southeast Asia for baseball. The new cheerleaders, selected by the federation, added to the excitement, transforming the stadium into a vibrant, football-like atmosphere. The match's popularity extended online, with tens of thousands tuning in via YouTube, a significant increase from previous tournaments.
The surge in interest is also reflected in merchandise sales, with Thai national baseball jerseys becoming highly sought-after items. Despite the vibrant home support, Thailand lost 3-5 to the Philippines in the final. However, Duangchot Suwannacharas, President of the Thai Baseball Federation, remained optimistic, noting that fan interest had far exceeded expectations and called for increased support from the government and private sector to sustain this momentum.
"Thai baseball has a bright future," he said, adding that the team is now focused on winning gold in the upcoming baseball event. The Games continue on Sunday, with Vietnamese athletes advancing to the finals in three out of four swimming events. Vietnam will compete in 23 sports on Saturday, including a maximum of 30 finals across nine sports, such as swimming, athletics, karate, taekwondo, weightlifting, kickboxing, pencak silat, shooting, and chess.
Nguyen Thi Oanh and Le Thi Tuyet will compete in the women's 5,000m final at 6:45 p.m. today. Oanh, Vietnam's most successful track and field athlete at the SEA Games with 12 gold medals, will also compete in the 3,000m steeplechase and the 10,000m run.
