In a remarkable turn of events, a crew of four astronauts has had to cut their mission short due to an urgent medical situation involving one of their own. This pivotal moment unfolded as a SpaceX capsule, known as the "Endeavour," made its way back from the International Space Station (ISS), with plans to land off the coast of California.
The Endeavour spacecraft initiated its descent from orbit at 22:30 GMT on Wednesday, embarking on a journey that will take approximately ten and a half hours, aiming for a Thursday morning splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, according to NASA, the American space agency.
Aboard the Endeavour are NASA astronauts Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke, alongside Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui and Russian astronaut Oleg Platonov. During their 167 days in space, this team conducted extensive scientific research as part of SpaceX’s eleventh crewed mission and took part in NASA’s Expedition 74, which commenced on December 8.
However, on January 8, NASA announced that their mission would conclude sooner than initially scheduled due to a serious medical issue concerning one of the astronauts. Originally, the Endeavour's return was anticipated in late February. While NASA did not disclose specific details about the medical condition, emphasizing the importance of crew privacy, Chief Health and Medical Officer James Polk clarified that it was unrelated to operations aboard the space station. Notably, this incident marks a historic first for NASA.
"Our priority is always the health and safety of our astronauts, and in this situation, we are prioritizing that principle," Polk stated.
Fincke, a retired colonel from the U.S. Air Force and commander of Expedition 74, expressed on Instagram that the decision to end the SpaceX mission early was justified. He stated, "This was a thoughtful choice to ensure that appropriate medical evaluations could be done on Earth, where comprehensive diagnostic resources are available. It’s the right decision, even though it carries a hint of sadness."
On Wednesday, NASA provided a live broadcast of the Endeavour closing its hatch and undocking from the ISS, gracefully drifting away from the station while positioned over Australia at an altitude of over 400 kilometers (248 miles).
Social media posts from the ISS captured images of the astronauts donning their distinctive black-and-white Dragon pressure suits in preparation for their departure. The live stream will continue as the Endeavour ignites its engines during re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere and deploys its parachutes before landing in the Pacific Ocean.
After the departure of SpaceX Crew-11, three astronauts—two from Russia and one from NASA—will remain aboard the space station to continue with Expedition 74. Looking ahead, preparations are underway for the upcoming SpaceX Crew-12 mission, scheduled for February, to bring additional crew members back to the ISS.
